Lets Collaborate!

Hello Friend!

Welcome to this secret page. Here I can show you some proof of concept type stuff that isn’t ready for public display yet. It’s a place for you to get a sense of what this project is going for and what opportunities there are for collaboration and discovery. I’ll lay out some of my current ideas and what I’m actively pursuing, but I welcome ideas!

Portraits

Musicians: As you can see from the current work I’m basically doing a “hero” shot out in the woods, as well as some detail shots of the instrument. When possible I’d love to do this at a spot that’s meaningful to you.

Luthiers: I’d love to photograph you in your shop, including a “hero” shot, some working shots, and some detailed shots of your hands working. If you’ve got any instruments to showcase, I can get some detailed photos of them as well.

The rest (Sawyers, Lumberjacks, Arborists, etc): Same as above with a “hero” shot of you in your element, detail shots of something we can bring specificity to, and some working shots. This is the area I have the least experience with. So I’m open to ideas.

Where will the photos end up? My intention is to share them digitally, usually accompanied by some thoughts or stories. And eventually put together photos that make sense together as part of a gallery showing. You will be welcome to use the images for personal use, and as long as we’re on the same page for professional use. Just not selling the images unless we’re partnered up on it.

Field Recordings

Musicians: I’d love to record you playing a song. This can be solo, a duet, or possibly a larger ensemble. The intention is to showcase you playing in the woods, with some woodland sounds on the projects youtube channel. And eventually when there is a gallery showing these videos will add a sonic element to what people are seeing.

Interviews

Right now the general thought behind these interviews is to bring a better understanding of how instruments come to be. And the life cycle of the tree all the way to instrument. This may become an audio podcast, or it may end up as transcribed text that accompanies photos.

Luthiers: I want to talk to you about the craft of instrument building. The things that excite you about building. Your process.

Sawyers: What goes into processing lumber and how does the end use shift what you do? Does the end product change how you approach your work? What are some of the things that would surprise musicians to find out about this stage of the process?

Lumberjacks: When you look at a forest, do you think about what the timber will be used for? Do you get excited thinking about how a tree will get used? How far down the chain do you picture? What are some different harvesting techniques? What would surprise someone to find out about your job?

Arborists: What is a forest? How does a tree live within the forest? Is a forest a community? How do different species interact? What planning goes into reforesting an area?

These are all the starts to a conversation I hope to have during this process. And it’s not about one person answering all the questions for a community. I want to hear differing opinions. And I want to hear from more professions and craftspeople.
